Princes Street hotels
Every major city has its principal shopping street and in Edinburgh’s New Town, Princes Street is that street.. As the southernmost street in New Town, it provides unfettered views of Old Town, Edinburgh Castle, and the green valley that separates them. In the late eighteenth century a decision by King George III to rejuvenate the old part of the city has resulted in today’s vibrant, upmarket shopping mecca, where many of the UK’s high street brands and stores are represented. Princes street’s open-ended south side transitions directly from shopping haven into green spaces, art galleries and museums making the area one of the most appealing commercial and cultural hubs of the UK.
- Stroll through the rolling green pasturage of Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens and stop at the memorial that honours United States’ soldiers of Scottish descent.
- Browse through the Scottish National Gallery, a neoclassical building filled with Scottish artwork in central Edinburgh..
- Gaze at the Scott Monument, an intricate gothic statue that pays tribute to Sir Walter Scott, one of Scotland’s most important literary figures.
Most of Princes Street is closed to traffic except for buses and taxis which makes it a great area to explore on foot. Being a very compact city, with the sights in both Old and New Town usually no more than fifteen minutes apart, the tangled maze of medieval streets in this city can be difficult to navigate by car, visitors are encouraged to use the newly completed tram, or one of the ever-present black cabs that can be hailed from the street outside any Princes Street store. Edinburgh Coach Lines is convenient for sightseeing, as it is inexpensive and runs between attractions.
