Piershill is a picturesque residential area situated on the northeast side of Edinburgh, close to Arthur’s Seat. It would appear that many years ago a Colonel Piers built a house on land overlooking Restalrig. It is where this house once stood that the Cavalry Barracks later found a home. In 1937 tenements were built on this same site, reusing stone facings from the old buildings. It is known as the Piershill Square and consists of 342 dwellings. This suburb has good shopping facilities, a public library (of which the residents are very proud), and several restaurants and pubs.
- Take a walk on the Arthur’s Seat trail, close to Piershill, a six-kilometre trail where you will climb to the top of Arthur’s Seat and encounter St. Anthony’s Chapel and Dunsapie Loch, on the way back to Piershill.
- Take a guided tour of the town under the Old Town in Edinburgh; guides dressed in period costumes will entertain you with exciting stories about its colourful past.
- Climb to the top of Calton Hill, situated in the middle of Edinburgh, where the unfinished Athenian acropolis monument stands against the skyline, a landmark of the city.
Edinburgh Airport, the busiest airport in Scotland, is located in the city. From there, there is a Lothian bus, which stops at the Piershill Library, or one can take a metered taxi or rent a car at the airport. Lothian bus #15 will take you from Piershill Library to the city centre, Old Town and the Castle. For a great, guided tour of the historic city, take an open-top bus; there are six routes to choose from covering various aspects of the history and sights of this ancient city. Walking is a wonderful way of getting to know the neighbourhood.
