Oxgangs is a pleasant suburb of Edinburgh that offers a respite from the busy city. Located in the southwest area, this town was named for an old Scottish measurement for land – the oxgang. Until the mid-1950s, it was mostly farmland. Then, housing developments and other modern construction began. Today, Oxgangs is made up mostly of apartments and houses, but there are also stores in the area. Guests will find three churches, a police station, a pharmacy, and other businesses. Recently, the town has begun renovations that will further improve this lovely place.
- Catch an afternoon game of the AC Oxgangs football team at Colinton Mains Park; over 200 children join in, so bring your little ones.
- Stop for a drink or some food at the Good Companions Roadhouse pub in Edinburgh; enjoy a game of pool, watch your favourite sport, or sit outside in the pub gardens.
- Relax at Fairmilehead Public Park in Edinburgh; adult visitors can sit and watch the wildlife and young travellers will enjoy playing in the park.
Oxgangs is an easily accessible suburb for visitors. Lothian buses run through the vicinity from other parts of Edinburgh. Bus lines 4, 5, 16, among others, all stop here. Use the N16 bus for night service. Travellers can also rent or hire a car to ride around the suburb. Parking is plentiful, since this is not a busy tourist location. If you are staying locally, you can walk or rent a bicycle to get where you need to go. As with most areas, taxis are available to take you across town or into the city.
