Newhaven is a conservation area located three kilometres from the city centre of Edinburgh, Scotland. This former village and harbour located on the Firth of Forth is a traditional fishing town first founded in the 16th century by King James IV who famously requested a new harbour for the Scottish navy. Although some structures from that era still remain, Newhaven has been rebuilt and restored several times, featuring new residential structures while still maintaining its ineffable old-world feel. Indeed, Newhaven’s iconic and unique residential homes reserve bottom floors for the storage of fishing nets and equipment.
- Stroll through Fish Market Square—one of Newhaven’s original 16 century settlements left over from the original 16th century—and find one-of-a-kind shops flanking this open stone square in Edinburgh.
- Visit the historic Armada Stone, an inscribed stone placard set into a gable wall dating back to 1588.
- Explore the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop in Newhaven and watch local artisans practice their craft, or shop for sculptures created by artists from Edinburgh and the surrounding area.
Newhaven is located near Edinburgh’s city centre, making it easy to access via public transportation, private car, or on foot. Several bus routes are available to take visitors directly to Newhaven from the Edinburgh city centre. The area is also well connected by roads, but because parking on the area’s narrow lanes can be difficult, holidaymakers and locals alike agree that walking or buses provide the most convenient form of accessing Newhaven. Indeed, this world-class destination is a pedestrian friendly area with small winding streets that beg to be explored on foot, a great way to soak up the atmosphere of this ancient village.
