Newcraighall, a suburb of Edinburgh, Scotland, is situated in the southeastern portion of the city. In the past, Newcraighall was one of the coal mining centres of Edinburgh, and the area quickly developed to accommodate the prosperity that came with the coal. Now the coal mines are closed, and Newcraighall has established a new identity as one of the shopping capitals of Edinburgh, with several large shopping centres that draw visitors from all over the city. This quaint village also has plenty of the “real” Edinburgh, as there are ancient pubs and medieval structures dappled throughout.
- Shop all day at The Fort, a massive shopping complex in Newcraighall that features an array of popular Edinburgh retailers alongside specialty shops and a bevy of restaurants.
- Check out the Bill Douglas plaque commemorating his film “My Childhood,” shot in Newcraighall and later one of the most beloved works of the Edinburgh filmmaker.
- Visit the annual Festival of Drama at the Craigmillar Arts Centre in Newcraighall, where you can also see art shows featuring some of the best up-and-coming talent in Edinburgh.
Edinburgh is an easy city to get around in, as most of the attractions are within walking distance of each other. The city also has a rich network of public transportation for those that do not want to walk. The best way to get there is to take the Edinburgh Crossrail service and get off at the Newcraighall railway station, which is the terminus of the line. From there you can walk the rest of the way to your final destination, as the station is centrally located in the suburb.
