New Town hotels
The New Town area of Edinburgh is really only new relative to the rest of Scotland, as it was first constructed in the 18th century and still has much of the neo-classical and Georgian period architecture that gives this “new” area an old-world feel. New Town is one of Edinburgh’s UNESCO World Heritage sites due largely to its historic buildings and the masterful way the city was planned and laid out. New Town is the hub of culture in Edinburgh, and contains some of the city’s most important monuments, galleries, and shopping centres, making it a must-see for visitors.
- Visit The Mound in Edinburgh’s New Town, where you will find the Scottish National Gallery, the best collection of Scottish fine art housed in a beautiful 19th century building.
- Stroll beneath the Scott Monument, a spectacular 60-metre Victorian Gothic tower that was built in Edinburgh’s New Town to honour Sir Walter Scott, one of the country’s most famous writers.
- Take a walk down Princes Street, where you will find a diverse collection of large retail stores and small boutiques that are perfect for a long day of shopping.
New Town is one of the most popular areas of Edinburgh and also a hub for its public transportation. The Waverly train station is the main station in Edinburgh and services local trains going around the city, as well as long distance trains for those going outside of Edinburgh to Glasgow or London. The best way to see New Town is to get off at the Waverly station and simply walk, as this will give you the opportunity to see the historic architecture up-close, while stopping along the way for snacks or the occasional pint.
