Plenty of pubs and noteworthy restaurants dot the landscape of this mostly residential suburb of Edinburgh. The old Longstone Inn is one such venue, tempting passers-by with the smell of great food and the visual appeal of historic architecture that has endured time suggesting it has many stories to tell. The history of Longstone, once farmland that got caught in the middle of political squabbles, can be found at the nearby visitors centre near the Water of Leith. The visitor’s centre exhibits historical area artefacts and has a café where visitors can have a bite to eat.
- Grab a bite to eat at Gino’s Fish and Chip Shop or else order a pizza, burger, or kabob online and have it delivered to your location in the Longstone district.
- View the war memorial at Redhall Park, near Edinburgh, which honours Longstone men who fought and died in World War I and World War II.
- Relax at Hailes Quarry Park, a 15hectaregreen space that used to be a quarry serving Edinburgh. It was once abandoned because it flooded but has since been filled in and turned into park space for community enjoyment.
The Edinburgh Airport is less than 5kilometres away. Land travellers heading to Longstone can catch a train to Wester Hailes Station or Kingsknowe Station, both about 1kilometre away. Public transit from the station takes visitors into Longstone and its vicinity. Lothian Buses pick up and drop off at many of the area’s tourist locations. The buses come to and from Edinburgh city centre regularly throughout the day. Taxi service is ready for hire to accommodate travellers going to places that the buses do not service. Groups who wish to go about together can hire a minibus taxi.
