Located in the east of Edinburgh, the suburb of Joppa is a quiet relaxing area with pleasant tree lined streets, a mix of modern and old residences, and pretty Portobello Beach. It has the distinction of being the funeral site of a shot-down German flight crew who conducted the first air raid of WWII across the eastern part of the city. Located nearby the Firth of Forth (a river inlet formed by glaciers in the last ice age), Joppa offers affordable seaside guesthouse accommodation while still close to the city for shopping and entertainment.
- Visit historic St Philip's Church, built in 1877 with its tall spire and belfry overlooking Joppa – the church where the funeral service for the enemy Luftwaffe crew was held.
- Dip your toes in the waters of the North Sea at Portobello Beach, walk along the Promenade and get fish and chips by the sea at this little gem of a place just outside of Edinburgh city.
- Fossick for millions of years-old fossils only 5 kilometres from Edinburgh city on the foreshore at Joppa Rocks.
Edinburgh is a busy transport hub, with an international airport receiving many domestic and international flights. Long distance trains and buses disembark in the city. Joppa has a main bus route into capital city that takes only 20 minutes, with daytime services running every 5 minutes, and then every 15 minutes after 6 pm. There are also buses running to nearby suburbs. If you stay at one of the Guest Houses in Joppa there is usually on or off street parking available. Within easy distance are main motorways and the city bypass road.
