The historic Grassmarket Square in the Old Town of Edinburgh is a pleasing admixture of old and new culture. What started as a medieval cattle market has recently been transformed into one of the city’s main shopping streets. Here, everyone from students to the elderly enjoy the many pubs, restaurants and retail shops that now dominate the area. Grassmarket has a decidedly youthful energy, and many restaurants and drinking establishments offer prices that cater to the many students living there. Situated in the shadow of the Edinburgh Castle, this former livestock market combines the best of historically significant sights with the some of the best eating, drinking and shopping in the city.
- Walk to Edinburgh Castle, which towers above Grassmarket from its position atop the volcanic Castle Rock.
- Stroll down to nearby Cowgate, a famous street where cows were once herded and visit the Magdalen Chapel and St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church.
- Take a ghost tour, where guides will provide spooky and sometimes humorous explanations of the witchcraft and folklore that surround the Old Town of Edinburgh.
Since Grassmarket is situated at the heart of the Old Town it can easily be reached on foot, car or bus. Grassmarket is well connected by a number of major roadways so reaching it by car, or one of the open air double decker buses will not be a problem. For the very adventurous there is a chauffeur driven three-wheeled motorbike tour of Edinburgh. However, the sheer number of historical attractions and interesting sights makes foot travel the best option, as it will allow visitors to meander at their own pace and stop for the occasional pint and chat with the locals, who act as personal tour guides for the city.
