Gladstone's Land hotels
Though a magnificent example of seventeenth century luxury living, Gladstone’s Land in Old Town Edinburgh reveals the reality of all aspects of living in Edinburgh tenement housing for every social class. The rooms of Gladstone’s Land help illustrate tales of public punishments for crimes, secret hiding places for money and important documents, rooms and etiquette for entertaining guests, and crowded family living with authentic furniture and artefacts. Interested visitors can even rent a flat within the building. This historic gem, now a nationally run tourist landmark, was supposed to be demolished but was saved by the National Trust for Scotland.
- Sign the kids up to follow the Gladstone’s Land’s Discovery Trail, where children scavenge for answers to trivia questions, hear stories from period-dressed tour guides, and follow the Wee Guide to see what life was like for kids in Edinburgh in the 1600s.
- Browse the onsite art gallery and gift shop to see revolving displays of local artist’s works and purchase Edinburgh-related souvenirs.
- Attend one of Gladstone’s Land’s special events, which include art and history-related workshops and demonstrations.
Gladstone’s Land is located right on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile in the city centre. It is within walking distance of Waverley Railway Station, Edinburgh Castle, and other attractions downtown. Bus stops are aplenty in the vicinity, making public transit to the site extremely convenient. Get to Gladstone’s Land by bike by following the National Cycle Network’s Route 1. Car drivers should note there is no public parking close-by. Hours of operation vary throughout the year so visitors will want to call ahead to check for the best times to go. Visitors will not find toilets or refreshments here, but there a ton of places to refresh and replenish in Old Town.
