Sean Connery was born in Fountainbridge, a district within Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1930. The Fountainbridge area of Edinburgh is just west of the city centre, and has been redeveloped from working class tenement houses and slums to a more upscale housing and shopping area. There is access to the eastern end of the Union Canal, and Edinburgh's tourist boats often float by on the canal. Bicyclists and pedestrians often travel along the side. The site of the old McEwan's brewery is currently being converted to entertainment venues and the housing units rebuilt and updated.

Just outside of Edinburgh's commercial centre, Fountainbridge is prime residential real estate. Its working-class roots have shifted to a wealthier residency now. Fountainbridge is quite easy to find, especially with the addition of the Fountain Park Centre. Getting there is an easy 10-minute walk from Edinburgh’s city centre along the Lothian Road. You may also get there by bus routes 1, 22, and 34. From the city bypass, Fountainbridge is just a half-hour bicycle ride down the Union Canal. Although the most residents take public transportation, Fountainbridge Road remains a busy thoroughfare for car traffic.
