One of the oldest thoroughfares in Edinburgh, Scotland, the Cowgate is a single street located in the Old Town section of the city. Originally, the adjoining neighbourhood was primarily the home of Irish immigrants, but in the years since then, the area has become more diverse and is now home to plenty of bars, restaurants, and clubs. Shoppers may also enjoy patronising the niche shops along the avenue. Along with its taste for entertainment, the Cowgate is also a historical district that boasts several standing buildings that date as far as back as the 16th century.
- Visit one of the Cowgate’s many music venues and late-night bars, including the Abbar 70’s Disco Bar, Bannerman’s Bar, and the Opium hard rock venue.
- Tour the historic Magdalen Chapel, one of the oldest buildings in all of Edinburgh, Scotland, that was built in the 1500s and remodelled during the 1600s.
- Attend a live concert hosted by the Musical Society of Edinburgh at St. Cecilia’s Hall, the oldest concert hall in Scotland, located on the Cowgate thoroughfare.
International and domestic visitors flying into the area will likely land at Edinburgh International Airport, the largest airport in the region. To get to Edinburgh’s city centre, guests can take the Airlink Express bus service to downtown and the Cowgate district. The city’s Lothian Bus system also offers plenty of routes through the city. To reach Cowgate, bus passengers may take several routes, including numbers 100, 35, and 22. Since the attractions at Cowgate are concentrated on one street, guests who stay at nearby hotels may easily walk to the many popular spots.
