Calton Hill hotels
Located just east of New Town in Edinburgh, Scotland, Calton Hill is home to some of the most important monuments in the city and offers unmatched views of the sea and the city’s rolling green hills. The hill itself had dubious beginnings as a location for executions but has since evolved into one of the most important political hubs of the city and many of the buildings can be traced back to the Age of Enlightenment. Now Calton Hill is the headquarters of Scottish government, as it is the location of St. Andrew’s House and the Scottish Parliament Building.
- Visit Edinburgh on April 30th for the annual Beltane Fire Festival, when thousands descend upon Calton Hill for vibrant parades and displays of fire led by the May Day Queen.
- Climb Calton Hill to the iconic National Monument, an incomplete structure that memorializes the soldiers who perished during the Napoleonic Wars and offers panoramic views from its perch above Edinburgh.
- Admire the ornate, commemorative tower of Nelson’s Monument, a memorial to Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson that honours his victory at the Battle of Trafalgar.
Calton Hill rises high above the city and is visible from nearly any location in the city. The area is serviced by the train at nearby Waverly Station and there are buses from the station directly to Calton Hill. The area has traditionally been a place of recreation for Edinburgh residents, so it is very friendly to pedestrians as well as cyclists. There are walking paths that snake from the base all the way to the top of the hill, which makes for an enjoyable walk with a big payoff at the end.
