The suburb of Balerno in Edinburgh, Scotland, is situated about 12 kilometres from the city centre. Balerno has a rich history that dates back to records from the 13th century, though the suburb did not expand until the 18th century, when industries like snuff and paper mills began to draw workers to the area. Mills were a major part of Balerno's culture until recently, when residential interests took precedent over industrial needs. Today, Balerno is known mostly for its public gardens, churches, and markets that offer a great way to experience authentic culture whilst visiting Edinburgh.
- Explore the walled garden and verdant woodlands at the Malleny House and Gardens, a large plot in Balerno that features some of the oldest trees in all of Edinburgh.
- Catch an exciting Currie RFC rugby match at Malleny Park to see some of the top athletes in Edinburgh compete in Division 1 of the Scottish Rugby Union.
- Visit the city on the second Saturday of each month when the main street of Balerno comes alive with a Farmer's Market full of local produce from nearby farmers.
With its excellent system of public transportation, Edinburg is easily accessible for visitors travelling without private vehicles. The city is also very pedestrian and bicycle friendly. Visitors may take the train from the central station in Edinburgh and get off at the Balerno station, or take the convenient tramline that goes along the Leith Waterway into Balerno, and get off at any of the stops along the way. There are plenty of dedicated cycling paths winding throughout Edinburgh, which make it easy to explore Balerno on bike or on foot.
