Steeped in history, Chatham boasts an array of attractions that include enthralling museums, a haunted fort, fine Chatham hotels and inns and a historic dockyard and buildings. The charming city is located on the banks of River Medway in the English county of Kent. The city's most famous resident is Charles Dickens, the Victorian-era author. For an exposition of the author's life, and a taste of what life was like in Victorian England, visit the fascinating Dickens World.
The famed Chatham Historic Dockyard, testament to the city's close connection with England's maritime history is a must see. It was the birthplace of Nelson's ship, HMS Victory, and is the current home of HMS Ocelot, a decommissioned submarine.Sign up for free membership with HotelClub to take advantage of our member benefits.
Fort Amherst is popular for many reasons, some of them downright spooky. The area around it has been inhabited since the dawn of time, and boasts an ancient Saxon burial ground. The fort houses a museum showcasing 300 years of military history. There is a warren of underground tunnels to explore, gun placements at which to gawk, and a café to slake your thirst. The highest points of the fort offer panoramic views of Chatham, nearby Rochester, River Medway and the surrounding countryside. For some strange reason, the area seems to attract ghosts and other supernatural beings by the truckload, which in turn draws intrepid visitors and X-Files-esque researchers in the paranormal bythe really small truckload. If you are up to it, go for a Ghost Tour. At night.
