Dont stay here !!

Absolutely dreadful place. Needs to be closed down & completely renovated. My room had damp patches, a rusty, unhygienic shower, lumpy old mattress, stained toilet that hadnt seen bleach in years! This is a shame because the location on the sea front is good & this could be a magnificent building and hotel

DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!

First room was covered in dust, condom wrapper on the floor, squeaky bed, bath didn't work, no view etc. Asked to be move. Second room was slightly better but still had a view of a wall aka no natural light, broken air-con so was really stuffy, a leaky bath with soaked over a metre of carpet and left a mouldy smell, decaying doors etc. FOUL. Worst hotel I have ever stayed in.

A welcome seaview

Decided to book this hotel on a whim, was sat on the train down to Brighton and our sleeping plans fell through so did 5-10 mins research and this seemed like the most reasonable deal. Was still pretty surprised how expensive booking last minute in Brighton was, at £122 for the night l was quite shocked at the value for money. On the surface this hotel looks lovely, it's prime location opposite the beach and Brighton Pier couldn't of been better. The outside of the building is old and needs some tlc but nonetheless pretty and characteristic. The lobby and bar area were the same, although there was some tell tale signs of neglect: seat covers ripped or coming apart, light bulbs out and carpets looking like they needed a good vaccum. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful even though the delay with the booking coming through wasn't their fault (because l'd only booked it half hour before), we got many apologies for the waiting time. Got up to our room after 20 minutes or so and was a little dissapointed with the value for money. The room was small, not a big deal for me, with the bed placed right next to the window over looking the sea - a huge bonus. Generally it was tidy and clean but everything looked very worn and there was some damp/wet patches on the walls with a notice apologising for the storm damage (l wondered how long that had been like it seen as the weather has been pretty good for a while being end of June now). The bathroom was ok, again tired and old but it did the job. Was some nice touches with tissues/shower gels supplied but only 1 towel and 2 flat pillows on the bed. All in all ok for one night but l did feel a little cheated at the price. Granted booking last minute can be an expensive game but it felt like they'd just shoved us in one of the horrible rooms at the end of the hotel that doesn't normally get used. Looked nothing like the pictures on this website!

Inexpensive - just don't look too close!

Ive stayed at the Royal twice now and always enjoy being in this mamouth example of what was probably once a spectacular seafront hotel. I say once, it's clearly seen better days in terms of decor and furnishings, best go elsewhere and pay £30 extra for the privilege of freshly painted, clean windows, contemporary furniture and a flat screen tv, if that's what floats your boat. But if you want a spacious room where you can't hear everything your neighbours are up to, a comfortable bed, a clean (newish) bathroom (with huge bath!), great location and helpful staff, then the Royal's the one!

Avoid - should have checked other reviews!

Rejected first basement floor room (black mould on ceiling above pillow, large rust patches on bath hand grab, stains splattered across walls); upgraded to fifth floor attic room (single small excruciatingly slow lift) but second room had largest dustiest cobweb ever seen, cracked jacuzzi, a failed light (which makes it harder to notice grubby chair upholstery) - didn't have heart to hassle pleasant hassled reception staff again. Icing on cake were the notices encouraging visitors to use alcogel to sanitise their hands on entry/exit to hotel/restaurant - these still dated from norovirus (winter vomiting bug) outbreak earlier in year (removed after I pointed them out).

Well where do I start

My fault, I tried to get accommodation in Brighton when everything was happening for the weekend. I didn't expect to be stuck in the basement with no windows!!! How the heck do you know what time it is? It was okay for what it was. The bed was comfortable, the shower was okay and the coffee much needed next morning. All in all if you want somewhere just to sleep without knowing what is happening in the world, then this is the place for you. On the positive side, it is close to the beach, the pier and the restaurants. If the room had been better, it would have been a great stay.

A good value short stay hotel

This hotel was clean and the staff were very helpful indeed. The only real fault would be that the decor and furniture are all quite tired. For this reason I consider the price I paid to be good value but I would not want to stay more than a couple of nights. I would say this is the 3rd time I have stayed here. Whilst staying at this hotel I highly recommend the Little Bay restaurant on the seafront just up from The Albion, with live Opera singing Wednesday to Saturday. The interaction is great and we had a real fun night.

Good Location

Room was dingy and awful-we were put in the basement , which looked out on a wall and drainpipes. Bed very poor- polycotton bedding. On the plus side, staff were pleasant enough, and location couldn't be better. Food was terrible- don't order the pasta!
