Great Barr hotels
Great Barr is large area located mostly within Birmingham in the West Midlands of England. Barr means “hill,” and Great Barr takes its names from the nearby Barr Beacon on the edge of Walsall. Great Barr started out as a rural farming area that was part of Staffordshire, but was ceded to Birmingham in the 1920s. The area expanded after the World Wars, when it was connected to Birmingham via rail and motorway, turning it into a large residential area. Now the area is known for its beautiful houses, historic buildings, and pleasant green public spaces.
- Visit the Bishop Asbury Cottage, an 18th century house that was the boyhood home of Francis Asbury and is still decorated with period furnishings and memorabilia from the famous American Methodist Bishop.
- Stroll the tranquil grounds of Red House Park in Birmingham, where you can see the famous Great Barr monument as well as an obelisk erected in memory of Princess Charlotte.
- Take a boat trip down the Tame Valley Canal in Birmingham and get a unique perspective on the interesting homes that flank the canal on either side.
Birmingham is known as the hub of the British motorway network, so getting there and around is very easy using either private car or the city’s public transportation. You can also use a combination of train and bus from the New Street station in Birmingham, where you can find direct transport to Great Barr. London is only 90 minutes from the New Street station, so it acts as the gateway to Birmingham and is one of the major travel hubs of the West Midlands. Great Barr is easy to traverse by bicycle, a great way to enjoy the green spaces.
