The ancient village of Erdington is a suburb of Birmingham, England situated about 8 kilometres from the city centre. The town is believed to have been settled in the 9th century by travellers who were moving up the River Tame from Tamworth. The area continued to develop during the Tudor period into the 18th and 19th centuries and this rich history is told through its array of historical architecture. Erdington was primarily an industrial area during the 20th century but has recently undergone regeneration and has a number of upmarket shopping centres and nice restaurants.
- Stroll around the Erdington Parish Church, a 19th century structure located on Erdington’s High Street whose eight tower bells alert Birmingham citizens to the changing of the hour.
- Shop for high-end fashion at The Fort Shopping Park, where a bevy of retail stores and restaurants provide a perfect afternoon outing in Birmingham.
- Take a steam or a few laps in the swimming pool at the Erdington Swimming Baths, a great way to relax after a long day of shopping.
Erdington is perhaps most famous for its Spaghetti Junction, a convergence of motorways, canals, rivers and railway lines that acts as a hub of the city. A vast network of bus routes that leave from the city centre extends to Birmingham and points in all directions. Also, three train stations offer transportation from Erdington to locations all over England. The Erdington Railway Station was first opened in the late 19th century and has trains that go directly to London. The suburb is best navigated by city bus, as the streets have plenty of traffic and are not fit for pedestrians.
