For those to whom the idea of a six-week shopping spree sounds not only acceptable, but desirable, Dubai is the place to be. What began in 1996 as the month-long Dubai Shopping Festival has been expanded in 2007 to a month-and-a-half, simply because so many shoppers show up. They arrive at the approximate rate of one hundred thousand a day.
City of Dubai’s history as a global trading center. Dubai began as at fishing hamlet, gradually developing a trade in pearls. With its natural harbor on the Persian Gulf it soon became one of the key trading centers connecting Europe and the Orient. Today more than a hundred airlines fly into Dubai, many of their passengers arriving for the Dubai Shopping Festival.
One of the biggest enticements of the Dubai Shopping Festival is that shopping in Dubai is, for the most part, tax-free, and Dubai makes a good thing even better with duty-free importation of international goods. The prime quality merchandise at Dubai’s more than twenty-five malls selling at bargain-basement prices includes everything from genuine Persian rugs to cell phones and iPods.
Dubai’s souks, or collections of street markets, also participate in the Dubai Shopping Festival and give shoppers the chance to haggle over items like fresh cinnamon or incense and perfumes at the Spice Souk, or 24-karat gold jewelry in the shops of the Gold Souk.
The Dubai Shopping Festival shares its limelight with concurrent attractions including the Carpet Oasis’ display of some one hundred thousand carpets, the nightly Dubai Jazz Fest and fireworks, street theatre, and daily prize raffles. The Global Village showcases international handcrafts, and for youngsters, there are tours of Children’s City with its planetarium and interactive exhibits on space exploration, nature, the human body, and global cultures.
The five-star City Season Hotel Dubai, located directly across from the City Centre Shopping Mall, provides guests with the perfect launching point for their Shopping Festival fun!
