Wat Phra Kaew hotels
Wat Phra Kaew
Wat Phra Kaew or Temple of the Emerald Buddha is not just one of Bangkok's major tourist spectacles, it is also Thailand's most sacred temple and spiritual centre. Located within the Grand Palace's complex, this site receives hundreds of visitors every day. The highlight is the 15th century Buddha statue, whose robes are changed by the Thai King to signify a change of season. The temple and its colourful, intricately designed surrounding structures reflect the Thai people's strong faith, creativity and artistry. Wat Phra Kaew's interior walls are equally impressive; with exquisite murals that depicts Buddha stories and images.
- Take a tour provided by professional Bangkok guides around the Wat Phra Kaew's compound to learn more about the dramatic histories of the temple and the surrounding architectural gems like the 19th century Phra Si Ratana Chedi stupa and the Phra Mondop library.
- Marvel at the elegant miniature model of the Angkor Wat; built during the time of the Siamese control over Cambodia, under the directions of King Rama IV.
- Visit the Balcony or the temple compound's interior wall; another fascinating Bangkok structure that contains murals that tell the full Thai version story of the Ramayana Epic.
Wat Phra Kaew is located in the Banglamphu area (Old City) of Bangkok. Visitors can hire a metered taxi or tuktuk (local transport) to directly reach the entrance gate called Wisetchaisri Gate. There are also several public buses that operate daily routes to the temple area. A longer yet scenic way of reaching the temple is through the Bangkok River. You can take the Chao Phraya Express boat, which runs along the river, and get off Tha Chang pier. From this pier, it's only a few minutes' walk past the riverside market to the entrance gate.
