Wat Pho hotels
For its sheer size, architectural grandeur, and rich history, the 16th century Wat Pho Temple, the largest and oldest temple in Bangkok, Thailand, is a must-see attraction. It is located in the city’s Rattanakosin district, next to the Grand Palace, on a whopping 20 acre plot enclosed by monumental walls with 16 gates. This huge complex houses some of Thailand’s most valuable treasures exhibiting Buddhist, Thai-Chinese, and Hindu influences, some dating back to King Rama I, who established the first temple and monastery on the site in 1788. These include beautiful gardens, historic buildings, imposing statues, and much more.
- Gasp in awe of Bangkok Wat Pho temple’s “Reclining Buddha,” the world-famous colossal 46 meter long and 15 meter high statue, constructed with stucco bricks and covered with gold leaves.
- Get impressed with Phra Ubosatha (Main Chapel), the temple’s most impressive religious structure, with its lacquered window panels, fine murals, and ornamental, three-tiered pedestal crowned by a Buddha statue.
- Have a relaxing traditional Thai, herbal, or foot reflexology massage; you will certainly need one after walking around the massive Wat Pho Temple, Bangkok.
The nearest airport to downtown Bangkok and Wat Pho Temple is the Suvarnabhumi Airport. From there, high-speed Airport Link trains, metered taxis, and public buses from the nearby Public Transport Centre are available for travel into the city. However, the best way to get to Wat Pho is by Chao Phraya Express Boats to Tha Tien pier, a short walk to the temple. Air-conditioned and ordinary local buses which ply along Chetuphon, Maharat, and Thaiwang roads also stop near the temple. Metered taxis, Thailand’s famous “Tuk-Tuks,” and motorcycle taxis can also take you to the Wat Pho Temple complex.
