Temple of the Dawn
The Temple of the Dawn, also known as Wat Arun, is a famous temple that is situated in the Yai District of Bangkok, Thailand, on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. The Temple of the Dawn was established in the 17th century, and was named for the way the morning light reflects off of the temple. Reconstruction occurred in the 19th century, giving Wat Arun its distinctive spires that have come to be one of the most recognizable symbols in Bangkok. The temple is surrounded by beautiful gardens, making it one of the best places to escape Bangkok.
- Go to the Temple of Dawn at sunrise to see the morning light reflect majestically off the pearly exterior of the temple, making for one of the most beautiful spots in Bangkok.
- Explore the ornate interior of the Ordination Hall of the Temple of Dawn, and see the Buddha image that legend says was designed by King Rama II.
- Come to Bangkok for the Royal Kathin Festival at the Temple of the Dawn and watch the beloved king of Thailand travel the river on a royal procession of barges.
Bangkok is city that is easy to get around because of its myriad of public transportation options and bevy of inexpensive taxis. The most interesting way to get there is to take a boat up the Chao Phraya River and get off at Pier 8, just across the river from the popular Tha Tian dock. You can take the BTS Skytrain to Saphan Taksin station and from there you can easily catch the boat the rest of the way to the Temple of the Dawn. Try to avoid peak traffic times if you are going to take a cab.
