National Museum hotels
The National Museum, Bangkok, home to the country’s largest collection of Thai artworks and artefacts, is located near the Grand Palace on Na Phrothat Road. Opened by King Rama V in 1874 to display antiques and other heirlooms gifted by his father King Rama IV, the National Museum features everything from ancient sculptures, intricate woodcarvings, and gemstones, to artsy ceramics, masks, and royal chariots. The museum’s rich collections feature antiquities dating back to Thailand’s Neolithic period, as well as successive eras leading up until Siam’s finally being renamed the Kingdom of Thailand. Locals and holidaymakers alike agree: this treasure trove of antiquity is a must-see along any Chinese getaway.
- Admire intricate stone engravings and ancient manuscripts at the National Museum’s Gallery of Thai History, in Bangkok.
- Visit the Red House within the National Museum, a teakwood structure that was once the private abode of Princess Sri Sudarak, a sister of King Rama I.
- Explore the 1787 Bangkok Buddhaisawan Chapel and behold rare murals as well as paintings depicting scenes from Gautama Buddha’s life and a legendary image of the Buddha.
The Bangkok National Museum can be accessed via bus, taxi, and/or boat services. Chao Phraya Express boats provide regular service to Maharaj Pier, the latter of which is located within a twenty-minute talking distance to this world-class destination. Alternatively, the museum is also accessible by boats operating from Wat Pho, Wat Arun, and Phra Kaew. Moreover, bus stops located on the west side of Sanam Luang are located within close walking distance to the National Museum. Visitors hoping for local authentic travel should board a Tuk-Tuk, a favourite amongst natives that’s both efficient and affordable.
