The Grand Palace
The Grand Palace is a famous complex of monuments in the pre-eminent capital of Thailand. Bangkok offers a lavish feast of attractions for visitors to explore but the former residential complex of the Kings of Thailand reigns supreme. Built in the late 18th century for King Rama I, the Grand Palace was the seat of the government, as well as the official abode of the monarch and his family, until just after the Second World War.
While one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country, the Grand Palace still has a vital role to play in Bangkok and indeed, Thailand as well. The palace complex is home to many government offices and holds royal banquets, rituals and coronations on a regular basis. The most notable points of interest within the Grand Palace compound include the famous Emerald Buddha of Wat Phra Kaew, Chakri Mahaprasad Hall and Dusit Phra.
Visitors can access the Grand Palace via Bangkok Metro or bus.
The current monarch of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej, lives at Chitralada Palace, some 6 km away from the Grand Palace and Chao Phraya River. King Bhumibol is the first monarch of the Chakri dynasty to live at Chitralada.
The palace complex covers more than 218,000 m2.
