Located in the northeastern part of the chic Wanhua District of Taipei, Ximending is the premier shopping and entertainment hub of this bustling city. The colourful, teeming streets of Ximending are lined with quirky boutiques, massive shopping malls, and thumping clubs that cater to the city’s large community. Many of the historical buildings were built during the Japanese occupation and this architecture, along with ubiquitous Japanese restaurants, pays tribute to the large Japanese sub-culture found in Taipei. Today, young people flock to the many stores and theatres in the area, which makes Ximending perfect for a stroll and interesting people-watching.
- Catch an array of live performances at the historic Red Theatre, which was designed by 20th century Japanese architect Kondo Juro and stands as a reminder of the Japanese influence in Taipei.
- Enjoy exciting and unique cabaret at one of the Red Envelope Clubs found on Ximending, where scantily clad women and transvestites sing traditional Chinese songs in this long-standing Taipei form of entertainment.
- Try the lao zhi hao (duck tongue) from one of the ubiquitous street hawkers along Ximending for an unusual taste of Taiwanese culture.
Getting to Ximending from the Chiang Kai Shek International Airport is easy using one of the express airport buses that serve nearly all areas of Taipei. The metro and buses are the best and cheapest ways to get around the city, but they can be confusing, so many people just take taxis to avoid the hassle. Taipei is the world capital of motorbikes and thousands of riders can be found revving their engines at every red light. Ximending is the first pedestrian district of Taipei, so getting around by foot is a wonderful way to absorb the atmosphere that overwhelms the senses.
