The graceful and slender blue spire of the Fraumünster, or Minster of Our Lady, dominates the skyline of Zürich, Switzerland. The Gothic and Romanesque-style church was first founded as a Benedictine convent in 853. The abbey enjoyed relatively independent authority until the 14th century and was closed in 1524. It was donated to the city, and the monastery buildings were dismantled. The church has been home to a Russian Orthodox parish and has conducted both Protestant and Catholic services. In the 20th century, Fraumünster was extensively renovated and fitted with the stained-glass windows for which it is known today.
- View the five magnificent stained-glass windows designed by artist Marc Chagall towards the end of his life with each window telling a part of a story and best seen in Zürich’s morning light, along with Giacometti’s window in the north transept.
- Take a look at the other architecture elements in Fraumünster, including the Romanesque choir, notable for its 18-metre height and its simplicity, the Gothic nave, and the cloister and its series of frescos by Paul Bodmer that depict the church’s founding.
- Cross Zürich’s Münsterbrücke bridge to get the best view of the historic church from across the Limmet River.
