St. Gallen General Information
The Canton of St. Gallen is a remarkable jewel that too many visitors to Switzerland bypass for other destinations, all equally worthwhile perhaps, in the spectacular country. Home to idyllic lakeshore hamlets, vast woodlands, bucolic alpine pastures and the UNESCO World Heritage Convent of St Gall, St. Gallen is exquisite.
The canton capital, also St. Gallen, is a lively town of 73,000 inhabitants at the heart of a metro area with an additional 100,000 people. Close to Austria, Germany and Lichtenstein, St. Gallen provides access to a slew of remarkable destinations and is the primary platform to the picture-postcard Appenzell Alps. The establishment of St. Gallen dates back to the early 8th century and the grand Abbey of Saint Gall. UNESCO describes the World Heritage Site as “a perfect example of a great Carolingian monastery”. While the abbey cathedral is notable, the linchpin of the complex is the medieval library. With a collection that spans more than 160,000 volumes, the ornate Rococco library is the most venerable in Switzerland and is open to the public. Other important landmarks in St. Gallen include the Kunstmuseum, Point Jaune Museum, Naturmuseum and Theater St. Gallen.
