Sodermalmis located on a large island just outside of Stockholm. Rather than being called its own city, though, the area is designated as a district within the larger city itself. Despite its inclusion in the city’s metro area, visitors to Sodermalm will find that the district exudes its own offbeat personality, serving as home to unique shops, niche bars, and impressive architectural sites. After dark, the area comes alive with the opening of trendy nightclubs such as Bar Nada, OchHimlenDartill, and Hornstull Strand, perfect for tourists who want to enjoy a night on the town.
- Visit some of the many notable Stockholm religious sites located in Sodermalm, including Hogalid Church, Maria Magdalena Church, and Saint Eric’s Cathedral, some of which date back to the 1600s.
- Travel to the top of Soder Torn, the tallest high-rise building in all of Stockholm, to get a breathtaking aerial view of the city and its skyline from its 86 meter-tall tower.
- Browse among some of Sodermalm’s eclectic boutiques and shops in the SoFo section (the area south of Folkungagatan), including Judits Second Hand and StockholmsStadsmission.
Visitors who are flying into Stockholm typically arrive at Arlanda Airport, the largest air travel facility in the region. However, since the terminal is located 40 kilometres outside the city centre, tourists will have to take the Arlanda Express Train or the city’s public bus route from the airport to the downtown section. Reaching Sodermalm is fairly easy for visitors, since the area is serviced by several metro and commuter rail lines. Both the red and green metro lines travel to Sodermalm, as does the commuter rail system and the Saltsjobanan suburban rail system.
