On the ancient island of Lovön, amidst sprawling gardens, the Drottningholm Palace stands proudly as one of Sweden’s most iconic buildings and popular tourist attractions. In a grand gesture of romanticism, 16th century Swedish King John III had the palace constructed for Queen Catherine Jagellonica. Over the centuries that followed, many royals passed through the castle’s hallowed halls, including queen-consort Hedvig Eleanora, King Gustav the III, and even Tsar Nicholas I of Russia, who visited during the 19th century. Even today, Drottningholm functions as the palace residence of the Swedish royal family, and is a true symbol of Sweden’s history.
- Just outside of Stockholm, explore the impressive royal portrait gallery of the Great Hall, and explore the ornate salons of Stockholm’s cherished royal residence, which span the ages from the 17th to the 19th centuries in construction and design.
- Discover Rococo designs and delicate chinoiserie of Drottningholm’s unique Chinese Pavilion, visit the functioning 18th century palace church, and revel in the fantasy of the legendary palace opera house.
- Drift through Drottningholm’s dreamy gardens, from the statue-strewn baroque grounds constructed under Hedvig Eleanora, to the glassy ponds and bridges of the romantic English garden.
Drottningholm Palace lies on Stockholm’s Lovön island. This island is to the west of the city’s downtown, but not too far of a drive. There are a few ways visitors can get there via public transportation. The subway is a popular method of getting around, and routes 17, 18, and 19 will stop at Brommaplan T-bana station. Visitors could disembark there and take a taxi across the bridge to the island. Many buses, on the other hand, including 176, 303, and 317, can take travellers close to the palace, stopping at Drottningholm station near the theatre.
