Norrkoping General Information
The traditional province of Ostergotland is one of the most venerable areas in the south of Sweden. While primarily agricultural, the small province contains close to half a million people who inhabit superb towns like Linkoping, Motala, Vadstena and indeed, Norrkoping. Strategically situated at the mouth of the Motala strom river system and a Baltic Sea bay, the city of 85,000 people is the eighth largest municipality in Sweden.
Norrkoping’s roots as a significant settlement stretch back to medieval times and namely, the late 13th century. The city was a major military garrison at one point but Norrkoping’s exclusive claim to fame took hold in the early stages of the Industrial Revolution. From textile mills to sugar refineries, paper mills to tobacco plants, Norrkoping was a feverish industrial dynamo from the late 18th century to the late 20th century. While most of the city’s industrial landmarks now stand as sober relics of a bygone era, Norrkoping has used the past to its advantage in recent decades and initiated sweeping urban revival plans. Happily, there are plenty of worthwhile points of interest to explore in town, such as the Rådhustornet, Arbetets Museum, Stadsmuseum, Hällristningsmuseet and immense Kolmårdens Zoo and Tropicarium.
