Regent lodge is built into the side of a jungle hillside overlooking the mahaweli river in a posh, but rural, residential area with 10 minutes from the action and attractions of the Kandy city center. Its seclusion is a virtue; from outside you don't even know its there. Entrance through the lodge gates into a large, high-roofed (there is no ceiling) hall open to a view tropical wilderness cascading down the valley side to the river. This is the reception, and where guests can relax with a drink on the balcony. It is uncluttered - with a few old pieces such as an hm v wind-up gramophone- and with a stimulating zestful atmosphere.
Little things which give the regent lodge the touch of caring hospitality, and which are missing in large hotels and ordinary guest houses, are there in abundance: daily supply of essential toiletries in each bathroom, name cards for every guest place in the dining room.
The table d'hote lunch or dinner consist of five courses created from fresh local ingredients and presented in a way that is instantly appreciated by gourmets. Not blind pap but artistically arranged dishes that are so full of flavor that even someone hooked on the rice curry would be impressed by the taste.
