One of the most attractive destinations in Spain, Toledo is close enough to Madrid to merit inclusion on anyone's itinerary in the country. Preservation-wise, the town is one of the most pristine in the world, from ancient Roman ruins to landmarks that date back to the Moors and the Caliphate of Cordoba in the 10th century. No wonder then, that the entire town of 80,000 people has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986.
The view of Old Toledo from the Tagus River is spectacular, with prominent standout landmarks such as El Alcázar and the Cathedral. The former was a stone fortification built incredibly, by the Romans in the 3rd century and still looms dramatically over Toledo. The city Cathedral is a 13th century Gothic masterpiece that takes hours to fully process and appreciate. Other important tourist staples in Toledo include the El Greco Museum and Santo Domingo El Antiguo Monastery.
Situated in central Spain, about 44 miles (71 km) from Madrid, Toledo is an old city found on a hill surrounded by the Tagus River. There are many historical sites such as Alcázar and the Zocodover to discover, along with twisting streets that are perfect for daily rambles through this medieval Spanish locale.
