The small city of Pontevedra is where people in the know go to experience authentic Galician culture and as a result, a slice of the real Spain. Unadultered by outside influence and eminently traditional, Pontevedra is the kind of city intrepid travellers visit to experience something bona fide and genuine. From the marvelous, rustic cuisine to the simple sights and sounds that accompany locals going about their daily business, Pontevedra is just great.
Of the almost one million people who live in the Galician province of the same name, less than ten percent live in the city of Pontevedra. The biggest city in the province is actually Vigo, an industrial, coastal metropolis of 300,000 people. The rest of Pontevedra the province is primarily a collection of lovely, quaint villages, displaying quintessential Galician traditions and customs. As a town that dates back to the Roman Empire, Pontevedra is wonderful to explore. Split in two by the Lerez river, the old city, or Zona Monumental, features many prominent landmarks and monuments.
