The Menorca Island Rundown
As the second largest island in the Balearic Islands, Menorca is a tranquil spot for travelers to come and explore. With unspoiled beaches like Es Grau, Son Bou and Cala en Turqueta, which are usually empty, visitors will feel like they are on their own private island. Even though this Spanish island is small, there are many things to do and see. In Menorca, tourists will love discovering sites like the La Mola Fortress and Monte Toro.
This desirable destination also offers travelers great dining, shopping and entertainment at Placa Alfons III or Plaza Domingo. As for the nightlife,Menorcaoffers many laid-back bars, like the cavernous Mirador Cafe, or the jazzy Akelarre to have a cocktail. For daytime trips, rent a car and traverse the other areas of the island. Mao is the capital cityand is a beautiful sight to see perched atop cliffs by the water. With its quiet, family-friendly attitude, Menorcais the place to take the young and the young at heart for a memorable island holiday.
When To Go
With its Mediterranean climate, Menorca has mild winters and hot summers. Tourists flock to the island during the summer months of July through September, and why not as there are over 10 hours of sunshine a day. Since the weather is always great, visitors typically find themselves coming to Menorca year round. The amount of precipitation varies quite a bit with hardly any rain during the summer and an abundance in the winter. However, the island still has more than 300 days of sunshine annually. Below are the average daily highs for the area.
March to May: 69°F (21°C)
June to September: 84°F (29°C)
October to February: 59°F (15°C)
Visitors to Menorca can fly in directly to Mahon Airport from the mainland of Spain, as well as from its sister islands Ibiza and Mallorca. There are several airlines that provide regularly scheduled services from United Kingdom airports, both major and regional. Mahon Airport offers buses to Mao every 30 minutes between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. and the buses run hourly after midnight.
By boat, Menorca can be reached by way of ferries from the mainland of Spain, and service is offered daily. Cruise ships often visit the Mahon harbor as well.
On Menorca, visitors can use car rentals, taxis, coaches and scooters to see the true scenic beauty of the island.
Spain's Balearic Islands offer untold splendor, paradisiacal conditions and countless occasions to party and forget all your cares. While Majorca and Ibiza remain synonymous with all of these delicious traits, Menorca (or Minorca) plays second fiddle to no destination in the Mediterranean. The island with just under 90,000 very fortunate inhabitants is a phenomenal place to discover and explore.
The two main towns of Maó (or Mahon) and Ciutadella form a popular base of operations for most visitors to Menorca. Both offer superb historic architecture in old quarters that seem frozen in time, a characteristic not altogether exclusive to either on the island. Menorca has countless little haunts to navigate and survey, from tiny fishing villages to forgotten castles and coastal fortresses. Of course, if all you want from Menorca is to stretch out on a quiet beach by day and while away the night at a seaside restaurant or bar, you can certainly do that.
