Usera is a district of Madrid, Spain that is situated on the Manzanares River just a few kilometres from the city centre of Madrid. Usera was traditionally an area for farming but started to be developed as a commercial and residential area in the 1920’s by Colonel Marcela Usera—any visitor might notice many of the streets are still named after members of his family. Today the area is largely known as a centre for schools and universities as there are several nearby. Usera also has a great collection of markets, cultural centres, and interesting modern buildings.
- Explore the Iron Jose Public Library in Usera, an ultra-modern facility that is known for its collection of historical texts that help tell the story of Madrid’s fascinating history.
- Visit the Usera Market, where you will find a great collection of local produce and snacks that will help make your stay in Madrid a delicious one.
- Get great views of the Manzanares River with a walk over the Bridge Prague, an important point of entry into Madrid from the south that was built during the Franco regime.
Madrid features a dependable network of public transportation that can easily get you to Usera. There is a Usera Station of the Madrid Metro and most of the sights in the area are within walking distance of the station. Parking in Usera can be tough to find and you will often see rows of cars parked on the streets that are so close together they seem to defy space. For this reason, it is best to use the metro and either walk to your final destination or catch one of the many cheap taxis that will be lined up outside.
