Puerto Del Sol

The Puerto Del Sol is to the city of Madrid what Times Square is to New York City. Spanish for “Gate of the Sun,” it is called this for the rising sun visible at the east-facing gate each morning. This busy city centre is constantly bustling with people and is adorned with such iconic symbols as the statue of King Charles III of Spain, and a bronze statue of the bear and the Madroño Tree, the heraldic symbol of Spain. Puerto Del Sol is also the site of the cherished Madrileno new year’s eve tradition: a famous bell clock rings in each new year as locals enjoy the traditional eating of las doce uvas de la suerte, or the twelve grapes of luck.

  • Tour the fabulous Palacio Real, the official residence of the Spanish Royal family.
  • Travel along Madrid's oldest and longest street, Calle de Alcalá, which originates at Puerto del Sol, and see such sites as Edificio Metrópolis, Puerta de Alcalá, and Plaza de Cibeles.
  • Dance the night away in Puerto Del Sol as the locals do at a megaclub, a multi-story nightclub with many DJ’s that opens its doors at midnight and keeps the music going until 6 am.

The city of Madrid is served by the Madrid-Barajas International Airport. Those coming by train from outside of Spain can take the Eurostar train to the Atocha train station. Once you arrive, Puerto del Sol will be easy to find no matter what mode of transportation you take since it is a well-known landmark at the centre of the city. If you take the Madrid Metro underground train, take lines 1, 2, or 3 to go straight to Puerto Del Sol. You can also opt to take a taxi, a simple matter. Hiring a car is another option, but since public parking isn't widely available and you will be getting around the plaza on foot, it is much more convenient to take public transportation.

What travelers to Puerta del Sol are saying

always a great city to visit. Good but crowded Metro service. Good quality complementary tapas at non-tourist bars.Spectacular monuments and monumental buildings. especially the Palace. Good parks.
