Plaza Espana

Plaza Espana is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the city of Madrid. While the square itself has been in existence since the 1800s, it only became a tourist spot in the 1950s after it was cleared of military barracks. Since then, two of the city’s largest skyscrapers have been built around the area and the square is now home to street vendors and residents who spend their afternoons strolling around the fountains. Thanks to its convenient location just off Gran Vía, Plaza Espana is located near several attractions, restaurants, and shops.

  • Explore the enormous stone monument to Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes, which also boasts bronze statues of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza and towers over Plaza Espana.
  • Go shopping along Princess Street, one of the major retail districts in Madrid, which is located at one end of Plaza Espana.
  • Enjoy a picnic lunch at the base of one of Madrid’s water fountains, located directly across from the Cervantes Monument.

Air travellers can arrive in the city by flying into Madrid Barajas International Airport, the largest airport in the area. A public express bus service that operates 24 hours a day offers convenient transportation to the downtown section and routes leave the terminal every 12 to 35 minutes. To reach Plaza Espana in particular, visitors can take the city’s extensive underground Metro subway by travelling on line 3 or line 10 and then exiting at Plaza Espana station. The plaza is located directly outside the Metro station. Private taxicabs also offer direct transport to Plaza Espana.
