Descalzas Reales hotels
Descalzas Reales, or “Monastery of the Barefoot Royals” is one of the most cherished historical and religious buildings in Madrid. The complex was once part of the royal palace that housed Portugal's Carlos I and Isabel; however, their daughter, Juana, converted the premises into a convent in the 16th century. Since the 1960s the museum in Descalzas Reales has been the means of support for the good Sisters who provide guided tours in Spanish and English. The complex is centrally located near the traffic-free Calle Arenal and close to the Royal Palace and the Plaza de Opera.
- Admire Tiziano's marble sculptures, masterful Flemish tapestries based on Rubens' work, and many more precious artworks as well as religious relics displayed in the 16th century Descalzas Reales convent in Madrid.
- Tour the glorious Gran Via, a world-renowned street in Madrid lined with gorgeous buildings such as the celebrated Edificio Metrópolis and Telefónica building.
- Enjoy the myriad eateries and cafes like the Chocolateris san Giles and La Mallorquina, located in the city's most famous square, Puerta del Sol.
Barajas Airport is only 24 kilometres from Descalzas Reales using Calle 30 and Autopista M-40 or the A-2 motorway. There are several airport transit options including the Carcanias commuter train, Metro rail, airport express bus, the night shuttle, city bus number 200, and taxis, which only go to central Madrid. Visitors may arrive in the city by train from Barcelona, Seville, Paris, and several other European cities. The Metro is a fast and reliable way to get around the city, and the commuter rails provide access to the suburban areas.
