Atocha Station hotels
The iconic Atocha Station is not only the largest rail station in Madrid but also the hub of all regional trains in Spain. The Atocha Station has a long history that started in 1851 when construction on the original building was first completed. After being completely destroyed in a fire the station was rebuilt in 1892 in a wrought iron renewal style designed by Alberto de Palacio Elissagne and Gustave Eiffel. The depot has kept much of this design but has been renovated and expanded several times, making it one of the best train stations in Europe.
- Leave a hand silhouette on the virtual shrine at the Atocha Station, a memorial to those who were killed in the Madrid bombings of 2004, when 191 people were murdered at the hand of terrorist bombs.
- Visit the concourse area of the old Atocha Station building and you will find an array of restaurants and shops to pass the time in as you wait for your train to arrive.
- Have a cocktail while meeting new people from Madrid and elsewhere at the nightclub located inside of the terminal concourse.
The Atocha Station services dozens of regional train lines, so those travelling to Madrid from other cities in Spain will almost certainly spend some time there. There are also a number of commuter trains that transport people to the city centre. There are also two stops on the Madrid Metro: Atocha and Atocha Renfe, that are linked both specifically to Atocha Station, and can also transport passengers to other locations throughout the city. There is a bus terminal just outside of the station for those who want to travel by bus.
