The Alhambra is one of Spain’s most-visited attractions and a stunning example of Islamic architecture. Drawing its name from the Arabic words for “the red fortress,” this historic palace and citadel is located on the banks of the River Darro just outside of the city of Granada in Andalucia, Spain. It was constructed during the mid-14th century by the Berbers, and occupied by various other rulers of Spain over the centuries. Moorish poets described the Alhambra as "a pearl set in emeralds," a reference to the original colour of its buildings in contrast to the natural beauty around it. The site is steeped in history culture, making it a must-see for any visitors to the region. Nearby, visitors can enjoy culinary delights, unique shopping opportunities, and fine hotels.
- Stroll into the Alhambra through the Puerta de las Granadas, the Gate of Pomegranates, a triumphal arch dating back to the 15th century.
- Marvel at the white marble lions that spurt water every hour in the Patio de los Leones, an example of early Muslim engineering and design.
- Luxuriate in one of Spain’s most lovely gardens, the Generalife, which entrances visitors with terraces of roses, lily ponds, shrubs trimmed like castle walls, and shady cypress trees.
Granada’s Federico Garcia Lorca airport mainly serves travellers coming from within Spain, although there are a few international flights. The larger Malanga International Airport in the nearby city of Malaga is a better choice if you are travelling from abroad. There are scores of options for getting from the Malanga airport to Granada Visitors can take the local bus #19, take a train from outside the international terminal, or hire a car in advance. Once your arrive in town, get to the Alhambra by taking the red minibus called the Alhambra Bus 32 or 30 from Plaza Nueva or Albayzin, and get off at the Generalife stop. The most pleasant way to get to the Alhambra, however, is simply to walk from Plaza Nueva, which only takes 15 minutes.
