The Formentera Rundown

Formentera is a small Spanish island located in the warm Mediterranean Sea. It is divided from a neighbouring island, Espalmador, by a shallow sandbar during low tide, which makes for interesting geography. Formentera is famous for its white-sand beaches, but be aware that many beaches allow nude bathing. Playa Illetas is a popular beach and often crowded, as is Playa Es Pujols, which is located in the biggest tourist resort on Formentera. There is a promenade here with bars and restaurants. You can also sightsee along an ancient Roman road dotted with watchtowers, the chapel of Sant Francesc Xavier, and a small ethnological museum, all dating back to the 18th century. Grab lunch at Café de Lago or sip a tropical drink at Big Sur while watching a spectacular sunset. Walk along Formentera’s pristine white beaches to take in the picturesque rocks and cliffs. The waters are warm and conducive to swimming and snorkelling amongst brightly coloured tropical fish, coral and exotic plant life. At night, there are plenty of clubs and bars to entertain you.

When To Go

Look no further if you’re looking for a summer vacation. You can’t go wrong on the island of Formentera. Choosing your beach of the day will depend on the direction of the wind. One beach is calm, but the other is not. It’s no problem if you change your mind. You don’t have to go far to go from one beach to the other.

Formentera Island General Information

When Ibiza becomes too heady, Formentera is often where visitors look to for some relative peace and tranquility. The Balearic island in the Mediterranean Sea is a mere 6 km from Eivissa but feels a galaxy apart from the clubs, dawn raves and DJ cults that made Ibiza so famous.

Easily accessible by ferry from Valencia, Dénia and the rest of the Costa Blanca, Formentera has grown in popularity as a seductive anti-Ibiza. The island is far from a chaste, demure destination however, as the nude sunbathers who populate Formentara’s gorgeous coastline will be more than happy to confirm. Nonetheless, this is not a party destination but rather, a holiday island made for people who want to keep it simple. A good resort, a pristine beach and warm Mediterranean waves: this is Formentera. With less than 8,000 people and a diminutive area of 83 km2, the Balearic island is vastly and refreshingly different from Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca. Happily, those who want a small respite from the beach can have it, courtesy of worthwhile points of interest like the Ethnological Museum of Formentera, Can Blai Roman Castle and impressive Ca Na Costa Megalithic Site.
