Ceuta General Information
A venerable sliver of Spain in Morocco, the autonomous city of Ceuta sits across the Strait of Gibraltar on the Mediterranean coast of North Africa. The city of 75,000 is not the only finger of Spain to reach across the sea of course. Once part of the Province of Málaga, the now-autonomous city of Melilla also spans a tidy parcel of Morocco, albeit one less fair.
Spain’s claim on Ceuta dates back to 1640, though the area was a desirable military and commercial stronghold since the Republic of Carthage held sway over the ancient Mediterranean more than 2,500 years ago. As a free port tax haven, the allure of contemporary Ceuta has less to do with archaeological ruins and more to do with economic opportunity and logistical ease. Ferry and cruise liner traffic disembarks here with consistent regularity and Ceuta obliges the crowds with a solid line-up of bars, cafés, shops and restaurants. The lively city also unfurls a singular mix of Berber, Sephardic and Andalucian cultures and provides easy access to colonial military garrisons on nearby Islas Chafarinas. Worthwhile points of interest to include on a tour of Ceuta range from El Conjunto Monumental de las Murallas Reales to the Parroquia Santa Teresa De Jesus.
