Hwaseong Fortress hotels
Honouring the tragic fate of Korean Crown Prince Sado, the 18th century Hwaseong Fortress is a popular attraction in the city of Suwon. Visitors can enjoy beautiful views of the city from the turrets and sentry points along the impressive stonewall. Evening casts its spell over this intimidating edifice, as the fortress pavilions are lit and create a romantic, old world ambiance. Proudly carrying the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hwaseong Fortress is a prime example of influential Silhak design elements and reveals more about the period when Suwon was going to be the capital of Korea.
- Gates and Pavilions: Explore the secret gates of the Hwaseong Fortress, used by soldiers along Paldalsan hill, and then enjoy an evening view of the Western Command Post, the turrets, and South Korea’s largest gate, known as Janganmun.
- Haenggung: Visit the 18th-century walled palace of King Jeongjo, known for its extensive collection of buildings, including the king’s bedroom, archery and banquet halls, and Suwon’s royal reception chambers.
- Hwaryeongjeon: Discover the early 19th-century shrine to King Jeongjo as you wander amidst the numerous gates of this fortress complex in Suwon.
Hwaseong Fortress is located in the city of Suwon, 30 kilometres to the south of Seoul. The neighbourhood which proudly surrounds this iconic fortress is called Buksu-dong, and is located at the centre of the city. Janganmun Gate is at the northernmost tip of the site, whereas the southern tip of the fortress park is capped by Suwonhyanggyo Confucian School. Seoul’s subway Line 1 makes four stops in Suwon, which makes for a great day trip if you are visiting South Korea’s capital. You can get around the city by taxi, public bus, or on a bicycle.
