With several beautiful rivers coursing through its heart, not to mention the area’s verdant forest, its high-tech industrial district, and its scores of included historical attractions, Seongdong blends nature, history, and the future into a one-of-a-kind whole. This district is one of several fascinating gu that constitute the sprawling city of Seoul. This area’s world-famous moniker translates in English to “the east of a castle town,” referring to the city's location vis-à-vis the castle walls that once surrounded what is now bustling Seoul. In ancient times, the site of Seongdong was an open field, referred to as Donggyo, but it eventually developed into a vibrant farming and trading centre.
- Walk along Seongdong's Cheonggye Stream to find the Gwangtong Bridge, the only ancient structure of its kind that is built upside down.
- Learn about the area's ecology at the Natural Hands-on Experience Learning Garden, which is located inside Seoul Forest, home to a variety of plant and animal species.
- For a taste of Seoul's past and culture, visit the Cheonggyecheon Museum, a building featuring two levels underground, and two above—home to a number of exhibition halls, restaurants, and gardens.
Seongdong is located east of Seoul City, with the Cheonggye-cheon, Jungrang-cheon, and Han Rivers winding gently through the district. The area features a superb transportation system, providing visitors with a variety of options for accessing this suburb. Visitors travelling along the subway should get off at Wang Shim Ni Station Line Two and take Exit Three or, from the same station, take Line Five and use Exit Four then walk for three minutes toward the destination. Holidaymakers travelling along Blue Buses should use lines 110, 141, or 145, whilst passengers on Green Buses should use numbers 0013, 1216, and 1411.
