Namdaemun Market hotels
Seoul, Korea is known as one of the high tech capitals of the world, but those who want to time travel to traditional Korea should pay a visit to the Namdaemun Market. This is a traditional market located next to the Great South Gate of the city, and is the oldest and largest market in all of Korea. Namdaemun Market was first established in the 15th century when it was largely a trading post for rice and fabric. Now the market is a sprawling, mostly outdoor complex that sells just about everything from retail fashion to tasty snacks.
- Sample Hotteok, a type of pancake, from the street vendors surrounding Namdaemun Market to taste one of the most popular and traditional street foods in Seoul.
- Find great deals on clothing at the wholesale stores located inside of Namdaemun Market. This is where many retailers in Seoul get their products so you can cut out the middleman and save money.
- Stroll through the market on a crowded day to simply enjoy the ambiance and energy found within that is set to the tune of street performers playing all types of music.
Cars are blocked from the streets where Namdaemun Market is located, so it is best to avoid driving, as it will be difficult to find parking. Luckily Namdaemun is well connected to Seoul’s efficient public transportation system so getting there is easy without a car. The Hoehyeon station of the subway is the closest drop-off point and there are also stops for buses and trains at the Seoul Metropolitan station that is just a short walk away. The market is a massive maze-like structure so it is best to come up with an itinerary if you want specific things.
