Insadong is a small neighbourhood in the Jongno-gu district of Seoul, South Korea. From the main street Insadong-gil, a maze of small alleys leads into the heart of Insadong. An art gallery and antique district, Insadong boasts many galleries and shops where visitors can find a bounty of antiques, handcrafts, and art supplies. In many establishments you can easily barter with vendors to get a bargain, but be prepared to carry cash to get the best discounts. Local merchants keep the old traditions alive, so seek the traditional teahouses among the modern ones for a true taste of Korean history.
- Stop at the Insadong Information Center near Jogyesa Temple to get interpretation services and tourism information, as well as free internet access and the opportunity to wear the traditional clothing of Seoul.
- Shop at the small shops of Insadong to find goods that can only be found in Korea, including traditional Korean clothing, pottery, paper, and crafts.
- Find one of Seoul’s time-honoured tea houses to enjoy the authentic taste of traditional teas as you listen to customary folk music.
Insadong is a place most visitors will enjoy touring on foot, especially on the weekends when vehicles are not permitted in the streets, making it easier to look around, wander the district’s little shops and visit other nearby attractions, such as the Joseon-Dynasty royal palace, Gyeongbokgung. You can get to Insadong on Seoul’s excellent subway system by taking line 1 to Junggakstation, or line 5 to Jongno station. Alternatively, Seoul also boasts many public buses, taxis, and tour buses.
