Seoul City Hall
As no other city, Seoul is a capital of modernist movement and innovation. Historic buildings and museums reflect the heart of traditional Korean culture, and countless heritage sites create a living time capsule within a sprawling metropolis. The new City Hall, however, invites visitors to consider South Korea beyond its temples and steaming Kimchi restaurants, and to look at the progressive architecture that is forming an expressive, futuristic urban centre. Completed in May 2012, the distinctive silhouette of the new City Hall complex towers above the traditional façade of the original, Japanese-style building.
- See the original architecture of the newly completed, glass-wave City Hall, designed by YooKerl of the architectural group, iArc, to capture the Korean topography.
- Relax for an afternoon of people watching on the lush turf of Seoul Plaza in front of the City Hall, the site of Seoul’s largest protests, and home to installations of floor lights and a floor fountain.
- Step across the street from Seoul’s futuristic City Hall to discover Deoksugong, one of South Korea’s Five Grand Palaces in the traditional complex of forested gardens, palace halls, and the National Museum of Art.
Seoul’s City Hall is located in the district of Taepyeongno, on the northern side of the Han River. The metro is typically the fastest and most common method of transportation. City Hall station is located between Deoksugong and Seoul Plaza. The indigo metro line will take you to City Hall stations through the eastern districts of the capital before passing through Yongsan-gu and heading south. Euljiro station is a few blocks to the east of City Hall. The light green subway line does a loop through Gwangjin-gu and the city’s districts closest to either side of the Han River.
