An imperial city dating back to the 14th century, Seoul is the site of many historic and architectural treasures that offer glimpses into South Korea's rich history. As one of the Five Grand Palaces of South Korea, Changdeokgung is an extravagant example of Joseon Dynasty architecture. The importance of this palace derives not only from its romantic landscaping and skilful artistry, but from its standing as one of the last remaining symbols of imperial Korea that partially survived Japanese occupation. Restored to its present beautiful condition, the palace beckons to visitors with its impeccable gardens, halls, and pavilions.
- Step into this Changdeokgung's breathtaking imperial gardens, made all the more vibrant during autumn, which is famous for its glassy ponds, peaceful nooks tucked away in foliage, a Chinese juniper tree over 750 years old, and whimsical stone bridges.
- Imagine yourself in Seoul of the Joseon Dynasty, venturing under Changdeokgung's massive colonnade pavilions of 17th century Donhwamun Gate and the inner Jinseonmun Gate.
- Discover Changdeokgung's historic palace halls, including the residence of the Nakseonjae Complex, the residential hall of Huijeongdang, the library and pharmacy of Gwolnaegaksa, and the main palace hall of Injeongjeon.
Changdeokgung is located between Seoul's wards of Jongno-gu and Seongbuk-gu on the northern bank of the Han River. To the south, you can find Jongmyo Shrine. Most subway lines pass close to the south entrance to the palace grounds, which is where you will find most of the buildings. The orange subway line comes from the northwestern Ilsandong-gu suburb or southeastern Garak-dong district, and stops at Anguk Station one block down. Changdeokgung is within walking distance of Hansung University campus. Alternatively, guests could hire a taxi from anywhere in the city.
