District Six Museum
The District Six Museum is an important historical museum that is situated in the District Six former residential area of Cape Town, South Africa. What makes District Six special is that more than sixty thousand South African citizens were forcibly removed from there during the height of South African apartheid. The District Six Museum was opened in 1994 as a way to document the removal of these people, as well as the culture and history that existed in the area prior to apartheid. The District Six museum offers a sobering and uplifting glimpse into the atrocities committed in Cape Town.
- Explore the ground floor of the District Six Museum, where you can see a large map of the area that includes handwritten notes from those who were removed from this section of Cape Town.
- See the street signs and other artefacts that existed in District Six of Cape Town prior to apartheid at the artefacts exhibit of the District Six Museum, a great way to learn about the former culture of the area.
- Visit the District Six Families exhibit and you can read first-hand accounts of what life was like for them in Cape Town.
Although getting around Cape Town can be tricky, the District Six Museum is well connected to public transportation, so you should not have much difficulty getting there. The best way to get there is by using the train and getting off at the Cape Town station, just a short walk away from the District Six Museum. You can also get taxis to the museum, but be sure to negotiate a fare first, as tourists are sometimes overcharged. There are several attractions nearby, so it is a great area to explore on foot.
