Thian Hock Keng Temple
The Thian Hock Keng Temple in Singapore is the oldest Chinese temple in the area. Founded in 1842 by a group of Chinese craftsmen, the local Hokkien community recognizes this temple as the most important one in their culture. During its earliest times, this ancient temple was a well-known prayer house situated on the shoreline of the Telok Ayer Basin. The temple eventually transformed into the Thian Hock Keng Temple (“Temple of Heavenly Happiness”). Many tourists come to this historic temple each year to take part in the celebration of Ma Cho Po.
- Join in the celebrations at the Thian Hock Keng Temple; this temple is home to a popular Chinese New Year event every January.
- Head over to the Chinatown Heritage Centre for an opportunity to learn about the history of Chinese immigrants in Singapore – the Centre has an antique Chinese shop, as well as houses and galleries.
- Once you’re done touring the temple, quench your thirst with a satisfying cocktail at the local lounge called Drink Culture Singapore.
Those visiting the Singapore area should fly into the Singapore Changi Airport. There are a number of transportation modes available at the airport that travellers can use to get to the Thian Hock Keng Temple. The Changi Airport Skytrain will transport arriving passengers to different stations throughout the city. Travellers can also use the Mass Rapid Transit system. The MRT is connected to the airport and can take you to the Thian Hock Keng Temple area. Once you reach the area, you will be able to get around by foot or bus.
